Activated Carbon FAQ: Orders, Specifications, Regeneration and Shipping

Buyers usually come to us with the same handful of practical questions before a first order or a regeneration project. This page answers them briefly. Where a figure is published on our product or facility pages, we quote it and link to the source. Where the answer depends on your grade, quantity, destination or spent-carbon condition, we say so plainly and quote it for your project. For a specific quotation, email Vincentlee@gblcarbon.com or call +86 13355329772.

Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) and Samples

What is the minimum order quantity for activated carbon?

Our MOQ is quoted per project and depends on the carbon type, grade, packing and destination. For scale, we recently completed and dispatched a customised 60-tonne activated carbon order (news). Contact us to confirm the MOQ for your grade, quantity and destination port.

Can I get free samples or a small trial order before a bulk order?

Samples are available; the buyer pays the courier cost. Trial order terms are confirmed on inquiry. If your application is new or the performance target is tight, testing at laboratory or pilot scale before a bulk order lowers the risk. Our pilot laboratories cover approximately 500 m², and a separate laboratory of about 100 m² tests raw material, carbonized material and activated-carbon parameters (Manufacturing & R&D).

Is the MOQ different for granular, powdered and pellet activated carbon?

MOQ is set per product form and grade, so contact us to confirm it for the item you need. We supply coal-based granular carbon, coal-based and wood-based powdered carbon, extruded pelletized carbon, coconut-shell crushed pelletized carbon, fruit-shell carbon, honeycomb carbon and mesoporous activated coke (product range). Tell us the form and quantity you need in your inquiry.

Lead Time and Delivery

What is the lead time for an activated carbon order?

Lead time is quoted per order and depends on grade, quantity, any customisation, testing and packing; contact us to confirm it for your order. Each batch is checked before dispatch; our customised 60-tonne order passed multiple quality checks covering adsorption performance and particle size before it was packed and loaded (news).

How long does shipping take to my country?

Transit time depends on the destination port and shipping route and is confirmed on inquiry for each shipment. Our activated carbon has been loaded in containers at Qingdao Port for Southeast Asia (news), and our Philippine coconut-shell carbon base ships to customers across Asia-Pacific, Africa, Europe and the Americas (news).

How long does it take to build and deliver an activated carbon regeneration furnace?

Furnace build and delivery time is quoted per project and confirmed on inquiry. It depends on capacity, heating method, exhaust-treatment scope and your site conditions. Transport dimensions, site access, unloading and installation space should be planned while the equipment scope is being defined (news).

Iodine Value and Specifications

What iodine value do you offer, and which iodine value do I need for my application?

Our published iodine number for coconut-shell crushed pelletized activated carbon is 1100–1150 mg/g; iodine values for other grades are confirmed on inquiry (product page). Iodine number indicates adsorption in micropores under specified test conditions, so it is only comparable between products measured with the same method, and it does not predict performance against every contaminant. The value you need depends on your target contaminants, contact time and treatment objective; send your application and we will recommend a grade (why test data matters).

Which particle size (mesh) should I choose for water treatment, air purification or gold recovery?

Choose the particle size that matches your equipment and flow conditions; our coconut-shell crushed pelletized carbon is published in 5–10, 10–24, 24–40, 40–60 and 60–100 mesh (product page). As a general rule, finer particles adsorb faster but increase pressure drop, while coarser particles keep bed resistance low. Gold recovery circuits generally need coarse, hard granular carbon that can be screened out of the slurry and withstand abrasion. Contact us to confirm the recommended mesh for your specific application.

What are the moisture, ash and hardness specifications?

For our coconut-shell crushed pelletized carbon, published ash is ≤3%, with CTC 82–95% and a molasses number of 12–13.5 (product page). Moisture and hardness for this grade, and moisture, ash and hardness for other grades, are confirmed on inquiry. Ask for the test method behind each value so you can compare suppliers on the same basis.

Can you customize specifications and provide a COA with each batch?

Yes, we customise activated carbon to the customer's specification; our 60-tonne order, for example, was produced to customer requirements and tested before dispatch (news). A certificate of analysis (COA) can be requested for your order; the documentation supplied with each batch is confirmed on inquiry. Agree the test methods and whether each value is a typical figure or a guaranteed limit before ordering.

Activated Carbon Regeneration

Can spent activated carbon be regenerated, and how many times?

Yes, spent activated carbon can generally be thermally regenerated; contact us to confirm how many cycles your carbon can take. The practical limit depends on the carbon's hardness, the adsorbed contaminants and the loss in each cycle, with make-up carbon added to replace losses. Our coal-based mesoporous activated coke is described as having high strength for repeat regeneration (product page).

Is regeneration cheaper than buying new activated carbon?

Often, but the comparison is quoted per project. In general, regeneration avoids buying a full replacement volume and reduces spent-carbon disposal, but the result depends on volume, logistics, contaminants, energy cost and make-up carbon. Tell us the carbon type, what it has adsorbed, the quantity and how it is handled today, and we will review the regeneration route (services).

How much carbon is lost during regeneration, and how much of the iodine value comes back?

Our granular activated carbon regeneration system is published with a dry-basis yield of ≥90%, excluding adsorbed impurities (GAC regeneration system); the iodine value your carbon recovers is confirmed on inquiry. For our powdered activated carbon regeneration system, the published yield is ≥30% for material at 50% moisture (PAC regeneration system). Actual loss and recovered activity depend on carbon type and adsorbed substances, and spent-carbon regeneration trials can be run in our pilot facilities (Manufacturing & R&D).

Do you offer a regeneration service, or only regeneration equipment?

We offer both: regeneration equipment, and spent activated carbon recovery, processing, reuse and regeneration services (regeneration services). The service is run by Xinjiang Guanbaolin Renewable Energy Co., Ltd. in Tiemenguan, Xinjiang, which operates rotary-kiln activation and regeneration systems with a published annual handling and regeneration capacity of 15,000 tonnes (Manufacturing & R&D). Service turnaround is confirmed on inquiry. For plants outside China, on-site regeneration equipment is usually the practical route. Contact us to discuss.

What size regeneration furnace do I need for my plant?

Size the furnace from your daily spent-carbon volume, moisture and carbon type; our published capacity ranges are 5–50 t/day for granular carbon, 5–30 t/day for powdered carbon and 5–20 t/day for activated-coke adsorption beds. See the GAC regeneration system, PAC regeneration system and activated coke regeneration system. Send us your spent-carbon type, tonnes per day, moisture, adsorbed substances and available fuel or power, and we will propose a configuration.

Export Packing and Shipping

How is activated carbon packed for export (25 kg bags, jumbo bags)?

Packing is agreed per order; availability of 25 kg bags and jumbo bags is confirmed on inquiry. Our dispatch footage of a 60-tonne activated carbon order shows bulk bags loaded on trucks (dispatch record). Include your packaging requirement, such as bag size, palletising and labelling, in your inquiry.

How many tons fit in a 20ft or 40ft container?

Container loading is confirmed on inquiry for each product. The tonnage depends on the grade, particle size and packing type, such as bags, jumbo bags or pallets. Because activated carbon is light, a container is usually filled by volume before it reaches its weight limit.
